Adding One-Digit and Two-Digit Numbers with Regrouping

Do you remember how to add a 1-digit and 2-digit number? 🤔

33 + 4 =?

First, you write the numbers in **column form!**

Make sure that the **Ones **are in the **right **(👉) column.

Then, you add!

Now, we’ll learn about addition problems that need **regrouping.**

**Regrouping in addition **happens when the answer you get for a column is more than 9. You give the extra value to the place on its left.

Let’s try it out.

37 + 5 =?

Let’s **stack the numbers vertically** to start.

Then, let’s take a look at the counters that represent each number.

When we add 7 and 5, we get 12.

We can’t fit twelve in the ones column, so we **need to regroup**.

👉 12 is 1 Ten and 2 Ones.

We add that 1 Ten to the Tens place. Now, we only have 2 Ones left.

We write that in the Ones column.

In our Tens column, we have 3 Tens plus the 1 Ten that we added.

We add these together.

What do we get?

We get 4. We write that in the Ones column.

Our final answer is 42.

You got it! 💪

Let’s try it again.

15 + 9 =?

Let’s stack the problem vertically:

We’ll add 5 and 9 to get 14.

👉 14 is 1 Ten and 4 Ones.

5 + 9 = 14

Put the 4 in the Ones column and move the 1 to the Tens column.

Now, add the numbers in the tens column.

Don't forget to add the 1 Ten we got from the Ones column! 🤓

Our final answer is 24.

Awesome work! 🤗

Well done! 💪 Now, you can move on to practice what you've learned!
